Android Nougat Features : A Quick Overview

After releasing of Android 6.0, Google has finally announced Android 7.0 on June 30, 2016. Now the only one question is in everyone’s mind is that what is the special features in Android Nougat. What does the latest Android OS iteration has in store for us. That’s why today I’m here with this post in which I’ll discuss about Android Nougat, its release date, key features and much more. Let’s get started:

Google announced the official name of new mobile operating system as Android 7.0 Nougat. Android 7.0 is the seventh major version of the Android operating system. The entire process involved in naming and suggestions for the new Android was done on Snapchat. This Android version introduces some specific changes to the Android operating system and its development platform. The main features in this Android version is the ability to display multiple apps on-screen at once. This is done by a split-screen view, that can be use for inline replies to notifications. as well as an OpenJDK-based Java environment.

At the Google I/O keynote on May 18, Google announced a beta Android 7.0 Nougat release. This developer preview mainly focuses on three aspects: security, performance and productivity. Native VR support with a new VR platform called Daydream has also been confirmed.

Android Nougat has been revealed much earlier than it has in the past, with a preview version of Android Nougat made available by Google on 9 March, it was updated on 13 April with a second version, before the third version and the first public beta arrived on May 18. The fifth and final developer preview arrived on 19 July. Finally launched on 22 August 2016.

In the past the first glimpse of the next version of Android has been at Google I/O. This is Google’s developer conference which opened this year on 18 May. We saw a lot more from Google on Android Nougat, along with the publish of Daydream VR which will be heavily baked in to Google’s next mobile operating system version.

The final Android 7.0 Nougat SDK has arrived along with the final APIs. Now developers can compile apps to API level 24, clearly indicating that the Android Nougat apps are finally arriving on the Play Store.

Some of the notable apps coming with the beta program are WhatsApp, Facebook, Nova Launcher and Spotify.

In an announcement press release, Google has reconfirmed the summer release of the operating system. So we can expect that the Android 7.0 Nougat Developer preview 4 will very soon arrive on your device.

Third developer preview of Android Nougat promises increased stability. It is so effective that Google is encouraging even casual users to install it on their device. The build now works with Apple Pay, making it more functional. The build number for the preview is NPD35K. In Developer Preview 3 Google has mainly focused on three things these are –

Performance

In Android JIT compiler improves software performance. The JIT compiler ensures that the applications install up to 75% faster and the compiler code will be reduced by near about 50%. This will ultimately boost your device performance and make it more faster during work.

Security

Through various facilities like media framework hardening, file based encryption and seamless updates the build ensures full security of your device. you don’t even need to enter your device password upon restarting.

Productivity

In this preview build, Google has clearly focused on productivity. The company believes that most of the people only use their seven most recent apps for their app drawer. So the drawer will only be limited to these. A Clear all button is also present, which lets you clear all unnecessary apps from the app drawer.

Double-tapping the recent apps button will let you quickly switch to the previous app. However in some devices, you’ll to long press the same button.

 

Multitasking Nougat Window

 

In this preview build, Google has clearly focused on productivity. The company believes that most of the people only use their seven most recent apps for their app drawer. So the drawer will only be limited to these. A Clear all button is also present, which lets you clear all unnecessary apps from the app drawer.

Double-tapping the recent apps button will let you quickly switch to the previous app. However in some devices, you’ll to long press the same button.

Also the feature lets you disable unnecessary notifications by long pressing them.

 

Android VR

Day dream

Android VR (Virtual Reality) has been finally introduced. Daydream, a VR platform for mobile was announced in the developer preview 2. It comes with a set of specs phones have to meet to be VR compatible. Many manufacturers including Samsung, HTC, LG, Xiaomi and Huawei are making Daydream-compatible devices.

Developer preview of Android 7.0 was released on April 13. Its latest version lets you use launchers to create shortcuts, like adding a memo to the calendar, with just one press.

Also the Emojis Unicode 9 support is now added. You can also see variety of new APIs like Vulkan to improve gaming performance.

Reply to messages from the notifications bar

This new feature resembles Apple iOS. It lets you answer your messages directly from the notification panel. Now you don’t need to leave and app or unlock your device to reply messages.

Multi-window mode

Google is working quite hard to bring a native and efficient multitasking system to Android. Even if this feature was eventually discarded from Android 6.0 Marshmallow, it’s all set to arrive with Android 7.0

Just like most of the platforms, developers will need to choose for the split screen mode to let their apps run seamlessly. This can be done with the help of a new attribute called: resizableActivity.

Doze, the energy saving mode has been enhanced in Android 7.0 Nougat. Previously the feature only worked when the phone remained undisturbed for a long time. However, now it also saves your battery when the screen is turned off, thus allowing you to save more battery.

Developer Preview 1

The first update to developer preview 1 was released on March 1. It is currently available on some Nexus devices. It was basically a test version of the new Android software primarily intended for developers and just like its successors like Android M (later released as Android Marshmallow), the first version doesn’t contain all the new features but their fragments.

How to download Android Nougat

In case you’re a developer or just want to test the Android 7.0 Nougat’s preview version, you can download images of the new OS directly from Google or from Android developer official website. However, the version is unstable and has many bugs. So proceed on your own risk. Moreover, only the Nexus devices can get the preview build of Android Nougat. Here’s the list of supported models:
